Joe van Nes
Island grown from the age of 10, Joe has an appreciation for the can-do spirit and environmental awareness of the Vineyard. He spent his early years exploring the island's many woods, wetlands, beaches, and ponds and getting familiar with the wildlife. In the past decade, Joe brought his love of the outdoors with him while studying in Hawaii and Wyoming and on adventures far and wide - living in a cave in Spain, hiking through jungles, and seeking out cheese in Brooklyn grocery stores. Learning from the locals wherever he goes, Joe incorporates old methods in new dynamic ways.
A filmmaker and former city girl with a little bit of country in her blood, Kristine was found by Joe eating cheese samples in a Brooklyn grocery store. A year later, Kristine was looking for a way to re-focus her work and debating leaving New York when Joe asked her to move to Martha's Vineyard for the summer. The island's commitment to sustainability and protection of natural lands resonates as Kristine spent much of her spare time volunteering with New York non-profits, Inner City Outings and Camp Interactive, which emphasize the importance of environmental conservation and stewardship by providing experiential outdoor education to city youth. While it never occurred to Kristine to include goats in her career path, Goatscaping has been a great adventure.
